Hämeenlinna was the administrative capital of the province of Southern Finland until 2009 and had 46,914 inhabitants (2004). It is located 100 kilometers north of Helsinki, the Finnish capital, and 73 kilometers south of Tampere, the country's second largest city. The city owes its name to the castle (in Finnish language) dating from the 13th century. Hämeenlinna was the first Finnish population located in the interior of the country that obtained, in 1639, the category of city.
