The Thousand Lakes

Finland is home to 188,000 lakes covering 10% of the country. Lake Saimaa, at 4,400 km², protects the world's only freshwater seal. Forests cover 75% of the country, making it the most forested country in Europe.

Main Regions

Finnish Lapland occupies a third of the country. Rovaniemi marks the beginning of the Arctic Circle. It is home to 180,000 people and 200,000 reindeer. The sun doesn't set for 73 days in summer and doesn't rise for 51 days in winter.

Helsinki and Capital Region has a population of 1.5 million. The architecture combines neoclassicism, art nouveau and contemporary design. The Helsinki archipelago includes 330 islands connected by ferries.

Lake District forms the largest lake system in Europe. Savonlinna, with its 15th-century Olavinlinna Castle, hosts Northern Europe's most prestigious opera festival every July.

The Finnish Concept of Welfare

Sauna3.3 million saunas for 5.5 million inhabitants. The traditional temperature ranges from 80-100°C. Parliament has its own sauna where political agreements are negotiated. UNESCO declared it Intangible Heritage in 2020.

Education: No standardised testing until age 16. Teachers require a master's degree. Finland has topped the PISA rankings since 2000. Education is free from pre-school to doctoral level.

National Design: Marimekko has been dressing homes since 1951. Iittala has been producing glass since 1881. Alvar Aalto designed 500 buildings that define modern Finnish architecture. Helsinki's Design District brings together 200 shops and studios.
